Almost nobody comes to Santa Marta for Santa Marta. It is the staging post for Tayrona, for Minca, for Palomino, and the city usually gets one afternoon on the way through. That afternoon tends to end at whichever place on Parque de los Novios has air conditioning and a free table. There are better options, and some of them have thousands of reviews behind them.
We did not visit these places in person — we say that up front. The list comes from cross-checking public Restaurant Guru listings in August 2026 and filtering on a rating of 4.4 or higher and at least 40 reviews. Review volume matters as much as the score: a 5.0 with nine votes means nothing, a 4.9 with six thousand means a lot.
Of 20 “café” listings reviewed in the city, 14 cleared the filter. Below are the twelve with the most backing.

The only perfect score on the list with more than a thousand votes behind it. That combination is the hardest thing on this page to sustain: one bad week normally drags a 5.0 down, and this one has not moved.
Kitchens that serve coffee: Mompox, Baguettina, Agua de Río
Mompox Café & Bistro (4.9, 977), Baguettina Restaurante (4.9, 813) and Agua de Río Café Bistro (4.8, 790) are cafés with a full kitchen rather than pure coffee bars. Worth knowing before you order: these are places to sit down for breakfast or lunch, not to take an espresso standing up. The food is the main act.
The middle band: Área 51, Café Altamar, MATTA
Área 51 Café Bar (4.9, 574), Café Altamar (4.8, 437) and MATTA Café (4.9, 301) sit between three hundred and six hundred reviews at 4.8 and 4.9. That is enough backing not to be a gamble, and they are usually less crowded than the top three — which on a hot afternoon in the historic centre is the deciding factor.
The rest
ITA’SI (4.8, 233) and Amar Café (4.8, 179) close the strong band. Le Café, Catedral (4.4, 144) is the one scraping the edge of the filter; it makes the list because it has enough votes for that score to mean something rather than being noise.
The coffee is grown above the city, not in it
One thing that confuses first-time visitors: Santa Marta itself is at sea level and grows nothing. The coffee comes down from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the range that rises straight out of the Caribbean behind the city, and the nearest growing town is Minca, about forty minutes up the hill.
So the split is simple. Cafés are in Santa Marta. Farms and tours are in Minca. If you want to see coffee being processed rather than served, that is a separate half-day trip, not something you do between the beach and dinner.

We started from every Restaurant Guru listing in the “café” category for Santa Marta, retrieved on 11 August 2026, and dropped anything below 4.4 stars or 40 reviews. The order is by review count, not by score: between a 5.0 with forty votes and a 4.9 with six thousand, the second is the better bet.
Two places were left out on purpose. A boutique hotel whose café rates very well is not here, because this is a list of cafés and not of places to sleep. And one listing with a 5.0 and only 42 reviews is not here either: the score is good but the evidence is too thin to rank it above places with hundreds of votes.
